Balmoor Sighting in "Lipstick Jungle"

So it turns out there was a show called Lipstick Jungle which apparently aired on NBC back in 2008 and 2009.  It lasted all of 2 seasons and starred Brooke Shields.  Don't worry though, I've done all the heavy lifting for you and found the most important moment from the entire series.  An appearance of a fake scotch near the end of the season 2 premiere.  Something tells me Balmoor 12 tastes exactly like iced tea.

Olivia Wilde & Bobby Cannavale Drinking Chivas in the Series Premiere of HBO's "Vinyl"

Any tv series which begins with an opening shot of the main character chugging Chivas is ok in my book.  We're only two episodes in and already this show has proven itself to be both thought-provoking and wildly entertaining.

There are two Chivas sightings in the premiere episode of Vinyl and I have included both in the clip above.  This is the first appearance of Bobby Cannavale on Scotch Cinema, but Olivia Wilde is no stranger to scotch imbibing.  Here's a clip of her ordering Macallan 25 in the movie The Change Up.

Fake Glenlivet in "The People V. OJ Simpson"

I know I know.  It's been a while.  Honestly, I haven't posted a scotch sighting in so long that I'd literally forgotten how.  I stared at the html code for embedding this clip for about 5 minutes before figuring out what to do with it.

It'll be a slow ramp up for the time being, but the site will be firing on all cylinders soon enough.  There is a huge backlog of clips and I'm slowly getting to all the great sightings y'all have been sending me over the last 4 or 5 months.

The clip above features a bottle of what appears to be The GlenKnolls, a scotch which doesn't actually exist and, up until now, had never been featured on this site.  Oddly enough, the exact same phoney brand appears in the very next sighting from a clip of a different show which someone sent me the following day.  I'll be featuring it in tomorrow's post.

As promised, heres the 2nd sighting of GlenKnolls or GlenKnobbs or whatever the hell it's called.  I guess it's the new Glencallan.  This scene is from season 6 episode 17 of Modern Family.

Lot's more clips to come.

Matthew McConaughey's Short Film About Wild Turkey Bourbon

As all six of our devout followers may remember, it was a scene from Matthew McConaughey' movie The Lincoln Lawyer which was the inspiration for this site over 5 years ago.  Now, after nearly 350 whisky sightings from film and television, it has come full circle.  Mr. McConaughey has been named creative director of Wild Turkey Kentucky Bourbon and has made this fantastic short film in which he tours the distillery, interviews the Russell family, and samples a pre-prohibition era bourbon.

Don't forget to check out the three previous McConaughey sightings here, here, and here.

Ryan Gosling Orders Up a Scotch in "The Nice Guys"

This flick is absolutely hilarious and Ryan Gosling may have turned in the best comedic performance I've seen in years.  As a fan of writer/director Shane Black's brand of action packed and comedic buddy movies, The Nice Guys ended up being everything the trailer had me hoping for.  The clip above takes place near the end of the film but I edited out any spoilers.

I've also included a great video essay by Evan Puschak (aka Nerdwriter1) about Shane Black's authentic and honest use of violence in films like Lethal Weapon, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and more.

Glenlivet Comes to Silicon Valley

If you haven't seen an episode of HBO's hit comedy Silicon Valley it's probably because you are a humorless zombie who sucks the fun out of everything while spreading despair and melancholy wherever you go.  The scene above features Erich Bachman, one of the most brilliantly written/acted characters on television, sipping some Glenlivet by the pool.  Minor spoiler alert since this it the final scene of the 3rd season finale.

Can't wait for season 4!

100 Year Old Whiskey in Louis CK's "Horace & Pete"

This one will probably go down as one of my favourite sightings of all time.  If you haven't had a chance to check out Louis CK's web series Horace & Pete then what are you waiting for? Huh?  I can't hear you?  Yeah, that's what I thought.  The show also features great performances from Alan Alda, Steve Buscemi, Edie Falco, and the greatest actress in the history of history Jessica Lange.

The above clip contains a (spoiler-free/heavily edited) scene in which Alan Alda's character offers a patron a sip of 100 year old whiskey.  The original scene is about 5 minutes long so I cut it down on account of I love you all so much.

"Westworld" Premiere Features James Marsden Ordering Up Some Rye

Stop whatever pointless activity you're currently doing and watch Westworld now.  NOW! Why are you still reading this?  Get that HBO GoPro app or whatever its called and strap yourself in.  This might be the greatest premiere of any show I have ever seen.  The reviews seem to back me up too.

The first scene from the episode features Teddy Flood (James Marsden) walking into the local saloon like Rocky Raccoon and ordering himself a glass of rye whiskey.  I just had to include it.  This is a series with seemingly endless possibilities and I can not wait for episode 2.  Thanks for continuing to read this post after I suggested that you stop.

Hakushu Spotted in "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D."

It appears the the agents have finally decided to switch from drinking fake scotch to drinking REAL single malt whiskey.  Season 3 episode 11 entitled Bouncing Back features Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) enjoying a glass of 12 year Hashuku with Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) while discussing his badass new hand.

Here is the previous so-called scotch sighting from way back in season 1.  Gotta love Glencallan!

This is also the first official sighting for The Hakushu.  I say first "official" because over 4 and a half years ago we posted about a scene from Kill Bill Vol. 1 which featured  a possible Hakushu Pure Malt.  Check it out below.

The sightings are coming in last and furious*.  Here's the third scotch sighting from Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. I decided to wait a few months to post this scene in order to avoid spoiling the season 3 finale.  The clip features a 40 year old Balvenie but also reveals a twist from the very last scene in the episode.

It has been over 3 years since there was a genuine Balvenie sighting in a movie or show, so needless to say I was pretty pumped to finally find this one.  Keep sending the clips and I promise they will be posted.  Most of the whisky sightings seem to get sent via Twitter but lately I've gotten quite a few from Instagrammers posting screenshots and tagging @ScotchCinema in the post.  Much appreciated.

Also, if anyone wants to send me a sample of this $5000.00 masterpiece, simply message me and I'll give you my address.

*There are zero scotch sightings from the Fast & Furious film series.

Time to "Get Down" With Some Cutty Sark

Any fan of Hip Hop isn't a true fan unless they've studied it's origin.  The origin of Hip Hop is a story unlike any other.  That story is told brilliantly in the new Netflix original series The Get Down.  Set against the backdrop of a decaying New York City in the 1970s, the series outlines the birth of the four elements of a musical and cultural revolution which conquered the globe.

Also, there is a Cutty Sark sighting in episode 2.

Glenfiddich 30 in "Star Trek Beyond"

Now THIS is an awesome scotch sighting right here.  clips like this are what this site is all about.  I was barely 6 minutes into Star Trek Beyond when all of a sudden McCoy (Karl Urban) strolls in with a bottle of 30 year old Glenfiddich.

Don't bother trying to find this bottle anywhere.  It appears to be a custom job specifically designed for this film.  The closest you'll come to getting your grubby mitts on this bad boy is right here at Master of Malt.

Am I the only one who finds this scene to be oddly reminiscent of the scene from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan in which Kirk and Bones have a birthday drink together?
-Both scenes have a somber tone
-Both talk about the alcohol being "illegal"
-Both take place during a brief period of calm before the storm.
Perhaps this is another example of intertextuality which Evan Puschak discusses in his amazing video essay.

See for yourself.  Skip to the 2:23 mark.

The latest Star Trek film is definitely worth seeing and Glenfiddich is definitely worth sipping.  Hard to believe that, even though Glenfiddich is the world's most popular single malt, we haven't been able to spot it on screen in over 3 and a half years.  The most recent clip goes all the way back to the original Jack Reacher.

Laphroaig Spotted in "Atlanta"

Life can be hell in the ATL.  Take it from Earn (aka Childish Gambino, aka Donald Glover).  Atlanta is one of the best new shows to come along in quite a while and it features the first Laphroaig sighting to come along in ages.  Hard to believe it has actually been  FIVE YEARS since the last time we saw this peaty Islay single malt on screen.  Luckily, my man Earn has good taste in scotch.

Laphroaig in "Water For Elephants"

Laphroaig in "Chloe"

Ben Stiller Drinking Laphroaig in "Greenberg"

Judy Dench Drinks Laphroaig in "Notes on a Scandal"

This series is hilarious and this clip is a great example of the some of the absurdist humour on display throughout.  Each episode is completely different but it never strays too far from the overall narrative.  The dramatic moments are every bit as powerful as the comedic ones.  Be sure and make some time to watch season one if you haven't already.

Is That Glencallan in "The Mindy Project"?

Time to break out your magnifying glasses and watch this one on your 70" 4k TV.  This scene from season 5 episode 7 of The Mindy Project features a nearly unrecognizable bottle of Glencallan.  Big shout out to Meleklerin Payi for finding so many of these awesome sightings.

I haven't been keeping up with this series in the last few years but I'm going to have to get back into it asap.  Mindy Kaling is both hilariously awesome and awesomely hilarious.  Also, any fan of the Howard Stern Show knows that The Mindy Project features one of the funniest comedic actors working today, Ike Barinholtz.  He always adds extra hilarity to any show, tv series, or movie which he happens to pop up in.

The 2nd Most Popular Fake Scotch Appears in an Episode of "Chicago Med"

When I think of fake scotch I immediately think of Glencallan.  There have been countless Glencallan sightings through the nearly 6 years since Scotch Cinema launched.  But lesser known phoney whisky is Balmoor.  It has popped up in quite a few cancelled shows over the years.  I hope this faux single malt won't be the kiss of death for Chicago Med the way it was for The Grinder, or Lipstick Jungle, or The Defenders.  Guess we'll have to wait and see.

This scene takes place half way through the 11th episode of season one.  I've never actually seen the show but I assume it has something to do with medical stuff in Chicago.  Enjoy!

Booker's Rye Whiskey Named World Whisky of the Year

A unique Kentucky rye has been crowned the planet’s finest dram by the latest edition of Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible.
Booker’s Rye 13 Years, 1 Month, 12 Days began life as an experiment by Booker Noe – grandson of Jim Beam – at the family distillery in Clermont, KY, shortly before his death in 2004.
Now it has become his remarkable legacy after landing the title of World Whisky of the Year.
Jim lavishes praise on its “brain-draining, mind-blowing” nose and finish of “amazing depth”.
And he hails it as a “staggering example of a magnificent rye, showing exactly what genius actually means. A very big, unforgettable whiskey from a very big, unforgettable man”.
Booker followed in his iconic grandfather’s footsteps by becoming master distiller at Jim Beam, but he was long-retired when he dabbled one final time.
After he passed away aged 74, son Fred kept an eye on his casks – and the result is pure liquid gold, scoring 97.5 out of 100 in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible.

Spend Christmas With The Sopranos and Johnnie Walker (Part 1)

The Sopranos is considered one of the greatest TV shows in history and Johnnie Walker is one of the greatest (if not the greatest) blends.  It's great to see them both come together for the holidays.  After all, Christmas is all about...family.  Check out the hilarious clip above.

Who could forget the classic Christmas episode from season 3 entitled "...To Save Us All From Satan's Power"?  During this episode we get to see several flashbacks to the Christmas of 1995 in which Tony begins to piece together the origin and causes of Big Pussy's betrayal.

Scotch Cinema is currently compiling and editing every Sopranos scotch sighting (there are over 20) for a comprehensive article as a tribute to the 10 year anniversary of the series' ending.  Yes, 2017 will mark 10 years since Tony and his "family" called it quits.  The second Johnnie Walker sighting from the Sopranos Christmas episode will be posted tomorrow.
