Glencallan Sighting in "Sons of Anarchy" (Part 1)

It has taken five seasons but I've finally gotten around to watching Sons of Anarchy thanks to a tip from my friend Steve (aka 3manquartet) on Twitter.  Steve hipped me to a Glencallan sighting from episode 5 of this season but I also noticed a brief appearance in an earlier episode.

The Glencallan has popped up in several shows over the years and is easily the most popular fake scotch on Earth. Click here and here for some previous Glencallan sightings.  This scene takes place about 4 minutes into episode two.

Does anyone else think that the bottle bares an uncanny resemblance to Glenmorangie Madeira Wood?

Here's the second Glencallan clip from Sons of Anarchy.  This one is from episode 5 of the latest season entitled "Orca Shrugged".  This scene is a little longer and a lot funnier than the previous one.  The Glencallan shows up about half way through the episode.

Another big thanks to my pal 3manquartet for sending me this sighting.  It's actually the first sighting I've ever received via text message.

The Very First "Gossip Girl" Scotch Sighting

It has taken six seasons but I finally have a scotch sighting from Gossip Girl.  I've never actually watched a single episode of the show.  To be honest, it has always been known as that show I hear from the other room when my girlfriend is watching TV.

Apparently there have been many sightings throughout the series but no specific brands were visible until now.  Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick) consumes copious amounts of single malt scotch in several episodes but, strangely enough, it was none other than Dan Humphrey (Pen Badgley) sipping Black Label at the bar in this scene.  The sighting takes place 39 minutes into episode three from this season entitled "Dirty Rotten Scandals".

Thanks Lorraine (aka @CupcakeCuzin) for the tip!

Pappy Van Winkle Sighting in "Crazy Stupid Love"

So I promised to bring you this sighting all the way back in June and have finally gotten around to it.  Several people have reminded me about it in the interim but when it comes to sightings, the scotch appearances always have first priority.

The clip below has something for both the ladies and the dudes as it features Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in the sack.  The couple is sharing a glass of Pappy Van Winkle 20 year old bourbon and the bottle is featured near the end.  The scene takes place at around the 1:12 mark in the movie.

Tom Cruise Drinks 150 Year Old Scotch In "Rock of Ages"

What can I really say about this film?  I mean, it is what it is.  I'm sure some of y'all out there love these kinds of movies but, in my opinion, quality musicals are few and far between.  The two things which make Rock of Ages worthwhile are the soundtrack and Tom Cruise's fantastic portrayal of 80's rock god Stacee Jaxx.  I'm one of those dudes who believes Cruise can do no wrong.  Probably because of his almost superhuman work ethic and balls-out commitment to a role.  He single handedly saves the movie.

The clip below contains all three scotch sightings and will give you a glimpse of Cruise's performance.  There is also an interesting appearance of the elusive scotch known as Clyburn.  You'll have to look closely to spot it.  I've added an enlarged screenshot below.  Some devoted readers may remember that Clyburn is the same fake whisky from The Dark Knight.  A little research revealed that Clyburn is a creation of a company called HPR Graphics which specializes in fake products for movies and TV shows.  Some of their whisky labels are pretty impressive too.

What do The Rolling Stones do to celebrate their 50th anniversary?  They drink some booze of course! Thanks to Uncrate for finding this.  Check out some pics below as well as the Stones' new single Doom & Gloom from their forthcoming album GRRR!

Here's the Fifth "Dexter" Scotch Sighting

We now have a tie in the race for the television series with the most sightings.  Dexter and Supernatural now have five apiece.  Hopefully Supernatural will pull ahead with another great Blue Label appearance soon.  Lord knows it's been a while.

Seems like every Dexter character with the exception of Deb has been seen drinking scotch throughout the show's 7 seasons.  Strange, considering Deb is rarely seen without a drink in her hand when she's off the clock.  Unfortunately, that drink is usually beer.

This clip takes place about 29 minutes into the latest episode entitled "Chemistry".  Watch the previous Dexter sightings here (1, 2, 3, 4).

Seeking a Balvenie for The End of the World

Now here's something you don't see every day.  If you look closely at the clip below you might spot a rather obvious continuity error.  There is a Balvenie sighting about eight minutes into the 2012 film Seeking a Friend for the End of the World starring Steve Carell and Keira Knightley.  In this scene, Dodge (Carell) visits his friend Warren (played by Rob Corddry) who pours two glasses of Balvenie.  At the 1:29 mark in the clip you can clearly see that the Balvenie has been switched with a taller, nondescript bottle.  A moment later the Balvenie returns.  How does this kind of thing manage to make the final cut in a major Hollywood movie?  Regardless, it's always great to see The Balvenie pop up on the big screen.  This was the first sighting in over a year.

Glenlivet Spotted in "Homeland"

There are two kinds of people in the world.  The ones who are watching Homeland and the ones who are sick of people asking them if they are watching Homeland.  I recently transitioned from being the former to being the latter.  Now I'm hooked on two Showtime serieseseses.  The other one being Dexter, of course.

The very brief Glenlivet appearance takes place about 19 minutes into the second episode from season one entitled "Grace".  I had to enlarge a few screenshots from the episode in order to confirm that it was, in fact, a Glenlivet bottle.  Hopefully there will be more sightings to come throughout the show.

Don't Trust the Whisky in Apartment 23

This might not be an official scotch sighting but I think we can let it slide for two reasons.  The first being the fact that June (Dreama Walker) believes she is ordering an expensive whisky, and the second reason is because I have a crush on Krysten Ritter.  There, I said it.

The clip below is from the 6th episode of season 2 entitled "It's Just Sex..." and features June lying to a bartender about being an NYC whisky inspector in an attempt to score some free booze.  My girlfriend recently turned me on to this show and I have to say, it's pretty hilarious and very well written.  James Van Der Beek playing an exaggerated version of himself is reason enough to check it out.

Ralfy's 2012 Whisky of the Year

And the Winner is.......Dexter Morgan!

In the race to find the television series with the most scotch sightings it appears Dexter has taken the lead with a grand total of six.  Looks like the Bay Harbour Butcher has defeated the Winchester brothers.

The scene below is from the 9th episode of season 7 entitled "Helter Skelter".  Dexter himself (Michael C. Hall) doesn't actually appear in the scene but there is a bit of a spoiler in there so you may want to hold off if you aren't up to date with the current season.

Here is the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th, sighting.  I'm sure there will be more to come in the 8th (and unfortunately final) season.

Every Macallan Scotch Sighting From Skyfall

Here it is.  The one we've all been waiting for.  What better way to kick off another year of sightings than by featuring the best clip of 2012.  Skyfall won't be released on video for a few months but luckily a generous malt maniac was able to send me a few clips from his advance copy.  I had to do a bit of shabby editing in order to avoid any spoilers, but ALL FOUR Macallan sightings are now compiled in the video below.

This is definitely the first appearance of a 50 year old Macallan on film.  The closest we've had in the past was this 25 year old sighting a few months back.  Click here and here to check out the previous scotch scenes featuring Daniel Craig in other films.  I've also included a few screenshots and some great Skyfall artwork below.

Some Weird, Fake Scotch Spotted in "The Mentalist"

The Mentalist airs Sunday nights on CBS and stars the most well dressed man on TV, Simon Baker.  That is literally all I know about the show.  I'm not even sure what a mentalist is but I assume its like a profiler or something. There, now that that's out of the way let us get down to business.

The 18 year old Enrich single malt scotch in this video pops up about minutes into the 11th episode from season 5 entitled "Days of Wine and Roses".  My favourite sightings are the ones where the scotch is featured prominently in the scene (even if it is a fake) so I had to include this one.  Thanks to Danny Maas for sending me the clip on the Scotch Cinema Facebook page.

MacCutcheon 60 Appearance in "Once Upon a Time"

I bet you never thought you'd see this again.  Or maybe you did.  The 60 year old single malt known as MacCutcheon first appeared in an episode of Lost.  Actually, it appeared SEVEN times throughout the series. Click here to see every MacCutcheon sighting from Lost and here for an awesome appearance from Fringe.

During the first MacCutcheon appearance in Lost, a character mentions that one swallow is worth "more than you could make in a month". I guess the two ladies in this video must be either very wealthy or very careless.

The clip is from the sixth episode of season one entitled "The Shepherd".  Big shout out to my lovely fiance Lorraine for finding this sighting for me. Thanks for looking out for me, baby!  I swear I don't watch the show.

Denis Leary Making Fun of Whisky Snobs

First off, let me apologize for the less-than-hi-def video quality in this clip.  I transferred it from an old VHS copy I bought a thousand years ago and time has not been kind to it.  Denis Leary's No Cure For Cancer and Lock N' Load stand-up comedy specials are two of my all time favourites.  I've always been a huge fan of his brand of humour and his delivery.

The clip below is from a bit in Lock N' Load where Leary expresses his disdain for people who are way to into things like premium coffee, beer, and especially whisk(e)y.  This one hits pretty close to home but ya gotta love his passion (disgust) for pretentious people.

Ben Affleck Drinking Macallan in "Argo"

I'm just going to come out and say it.  Argo will win best picture this year.  I've only seen 6 of the 9 nominated films so far but I have a funny feeling that Argo will win despite the Ben Affleck best director snub.  The film was brilliant.  Not quite as good as Django Unchained, but great none the less.

It is always great to see a Macallan sighting in a movie and fortunately this delicious Speyside (Highland?) single malt has been popping up more and more as of late.  This clip takes place at the 1:19 mark in the film when Tony Mendez (Affleck) snatches a bottle from the Canadian ambassador's house.  He has a big decision to make and needs some liquid courage to help him do the right thing.  Always works for me.

I've added some alternate artwork below.  Including the original fake CIA production poster used during the mission.

Scotch Cinema Johnnie Walker Cufflinks Giveaway!

$

0
I realize that the scotch sightings and articles have been fewer and farther between in recent months but that is about to change.  As I mentioned a few months ago, the site will be slowly going through some changes and will be branching out.  I started by posting a few bourbon sightings as opposed to scotch.  Later, I became a contributor to DrinkWire over at Liquor.com.  Next up, I plan to write more in-depth articles about whisky, film, and drink culture in general.

In keeping with the spirit of new beginnings, I've decided to have  our first giveaway to kick things off.  This is probably the easiest contest you could ever participate in.  All you have to do to win the Johnnie Walker cufflinks is retweet any of the Johnnie Walker scotch sightings posted at ScotchCinema.com.  They shouldn't be hard to find considering there has been 16 Black Label, 9 Blue Label, 5 Red Label, and 2 Gold Label clips since the site launched 2 years ago.

Not every one of Scotch Cinema's readers are on Twitter so there is a second way to enter.  Simply like any of the Johnnie Walker posts on the Scotch Cinema Facebook page to enter.  I will compile a list of every person who likes or retweets and pick a winner randomly based on whichever name my one year old daughter points to.  I will then contact the winner via Twitter or Facebook to tell you you've won and to get your mailing address.

A pair of cufflinks isn't exactly the same as winning a bottle of Blue Label or a shiny new car but hey, ya gotta start somewhere.  Perhaps if any other whisky ambassadors are reading this (and I know you are) then they could send me some other promotional giveaways for future contests.

Good luck!

-Curtis

Blanton's Bourbon in "House of Cards"

Sorry for the lack of regular updates.  I've been working in a very remote location as of late and for the time being will only be able to post 4 or 5 clips per month.  Thanks for continuing to visit the site.  Lots more post to come shortly, including the Johnnie Walker giveaway tomorrow!  Good luck to all who entered.

Here's a quick Blanton's Bourbon sighting from the incredible new Netflix original series House of Cards starring Kevin Spacey.  The Blanton's appears at the 42 minute mark in the series premiere entitled "Chapter 1". Actually, each episode title is simply a numbered chapter so they don't technically have titles.  We'll be adding more bourbon sightings in the future so feel free to keep 'em coming.  Check out the video!
